The series contains material relating to the third generation of the Fairbanks family of Saint Johnsbury, Vermont and is organized in three subseries: A. Sons of Erastus Fairbanks; B. Son of Thaddeus Fairbanks; C. Sons of Joseph P. Fairbanks. It includes school papers, memorial booklets, governor's proclamations, a diary, and business and family correspondence. The bulk of the material is contained in Subseries C., Sons of Joseph P. Fairbanks. Edward T. Fairbanks (1836-1919) is represented in the papers in a series of witty and affectionate letters to his younger brother, "Willie" (William P. Fairbanks), when one, or both, was at private school or college between 1853 and 1865. A typescript transcription of the letters contains penciled annotations by William's son, Joseph. Most of the letters are related to student life at Andover Theological Seminary, Yale, and Heidelburg, but Edward also accompanied his father on an 1855 business trip to Chicago. William P. and Rebecca Pike Fairbanks' letters occupy approximately 1.5 linear feet. Most of it is in the form of business letters to William as treasurer of the E. & T. Fairbanks & Co., a position he held until he left St. Johnsbury in 1888 to become a partner in Fairbanks & Company in New York City. Glimpses of his personal life can be seen however, in a few letters to his family and in his 1884 to 1888 letter copybooks. William's copybook correspondence reveals the care he took in furnishing his mansion, Brantview, his 1886 decision not to seek further political office, and his displeasure by 1888 with his business situation. The collection also contains Rebecca Pike Fairbank's diary for the year 1900, when she and her son traveled in Europe, and letters written to her son, Joseph and his wife, Luella Fairbanks.

Franklin Fairbanks was the son of Erastus and Lois (Crossman) Fairbanks of St. Johnsbury. He was active in the family scale business. He represented St. Johnsbury in the Vermont legislature during 1871-1873 and was speaker of the house in 1872. George Fairbanks (1819-1843) was the oldest son of Erastus Fairbanks. He was born January 21, 1819 and died April 20, 1843. Horace Fairbanks (1820-1888), son of Erastus, became president of the E. & T. Fairbanks & Co. after his father's death. He was governor of Vermont from 1876-1878.
